Whipped Sea jumps on board as an investor for Christoper Nelius' The Sideshow (working title)

24 February, 2020 Media Release

FINCH and Pursekey Productions have today announced that French production company Whipped Sea will join as an investor of The Sideshow (working title) documentary directed by Christopher Nelius. Founded in 2019, Whipped Sea is an independent production company based in France whose primary focus is producing feature length documentaries and docu-series with a human interest, adventure or environmental theme. They produce and co-produce documentary feature films such as Savage Waters directed by Mikey Corker, La Quête du Sauvage by filmmaker Jean-Charles Granjon and Against the Tides by BAFTA-nominated Stefan Stuckert. The company will come on board as a primary investor and co-producer of The Sideshow (working title), contributing to the film’s crowdfunding target of $250,000.

Directed by Christopher Nelius (Storm Surfers 3D), The Sideshow (working title) is set in the 1980s where the world of professional surfing is a circus of fluro colours, peroxide hair and radical male egos. Surf culture is the hottest thing on the planet and male surfers the Main Event. Meanwhile, women in surf are being paid a tenth of the prize money and relegated to holding contests during the men’s lunch breaks. The Sideshow (working title) is the untold story of how that ragtag bunch of inspiring characters broke loose to turn women’s surfing into the multi-billion-dollar industry it is today.

Ghislaine Couvillat, Company Director of Whipped Sea said, “The Sideshow (working title) is a documentary that slots perfectly within the canon of Whipped Sea content. Our passion for surf culture and exposing women’s stories in surfing are just some of the many parallels that exist between our company and this unique and exciting new project.”

“Ghislaine’s generous investment will allow us to carry out the full creative vision we had for the project,” said Producer Michaela Perske of Pursekey Productions. “Most importantly, it will allow us to strengthen and extend our important message for women not only in surfing, but in all professional industries.”

The Sideshow (working title) will be released in cinemas across Australia by Madman Entertainment later this year. The project has also received principal production investment from Screen Australia and is financed with the assistance of Screen NSW.

You can continue to donate to the crowdfunding campaign for The Sideshow (working title) via the Documentary Foundation Australia website.
